BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men's tennis team and head coach Steve Denton announced the signing of elite French prospect Theo Papamalmis on Saturday.
"Theo is a terrific tennis player," Denton said. "The first time we have signed such a successful young junior tennis player as he was a finalist at the prestigious Eddie Herr tournament last month. Theo is a very good athlete, who is also a very hard worker, and he continues our tradition of landing top French players here at Texas A&M. With he and Tiago Pires joining our team, we have the one-two punch that ensures Aggie men's tennis being very good for years to come!"
Papamalmis's current and career-high ranking is 30 on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Ranking in singles with a 15-3 record in 2023. The Paris native has won two junior singles titles, including the J200 BASEL where he went 5-0 and only lost one set to secure the title.
"I've been fortunate to get to know Theo throughout this recruiting process," assistant coach Barnaby Smith said. "I'm pleased to say Aggie tennis has recruited another world class player with tremendous fight. I think Theo will represent the 12th Man the right way and will always give everything he has for the program."
Papamalmis joins the Aggies with some junior grand slam experience under his belt. He advanced to the round of 32 at the Roland Garros in 2022 and made it to the round of 64 in 2021 and 2023.
In doubles action, Papamalmis has won two championships. In 2021, he won the J4 Schifflange and J5 Tartu.
Papamalmis joins a long line of Elite French players to join Denton and the Maroon & White. Including freshman Tiago Pires who takes the court this weekend in his Aggie debut at the Sherwood Intercollegiate and 2023 All-SEC First Team selection Raphael Perot.
