FORT WORTH – The No. 1 Texas A&M women's tennis team had all five entries advance in Friday singles action at the ITA Texas Regional Championship at Friedman Tennis Center.
Four Aggies took down their opponents in straight sets led by No. 9 Nicole Khirin topping Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Kseniya Ramanouskaya, 6-1, 7-5. No. 88 Jeanette Mireles dispatched of Houston's Sophie Schouten, 7-5, 6-2. Lexington Reed made quick work of SMU's Caroline McGinley, 6-1, 6-1. Daria Smetannikov bested TCU's Yu-Chin Tsai, 6-4, 6-2. The lone victory requiring three sets was Lizanne Boyer topping Houston's Gabriela Cortes, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Texas A&M was not as fortunate in doubles play where both its pairs lost round of 32 matches. After winning a round of 64 bout against Abilene Christian's Alice Klinteby/Marsha Vrsalovic, 8-6, Smetannikov and Boyer dropped an 8-6 decision to Incarnate Word's Sofia Salcedo/Estefanis Gonzalez. Mireles/Reed had a bye into the round of 32, but were on the wrong end of an 8-5 result against June Bjork/Arianna Stavroulous of SMU. Mireles/Reed were also edged out in a consolation bracket match by Tarleton's Noelia Lorca/Emma Persson, 8-7(6).
Saturday's singles round of 32 action is slated for 9:30 a.m. followed by round of 16 play at 12:30 p.m.
The two singles finalists and the doubles champion from the ITA Texas Regional qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship slated for November in Waco, Texas.
