ANN ARBOR – No. 9 Nicole Khirin and Daria Smetannikov claimed singles victories Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA Sectional Championships at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.

Khirin faced Oklahoma's Ava Catanzarite, downing the Sooner in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-0) to pick up her fourth win of the season. Smetannikov claimed her first ranked victory of the season over Ohio State's No. 71 Shelly Bereznyak, winning in straight sets versus the Buckeye (7-6(2), 7-6(1)).

The ITA Sectional Championship features a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw. Six singles players and three doubles teams from each section will qualify for the NCAA Championships.

In Saturday's singles quarterfinals, Khirin takes on Houston's No. 109 Santa Strombacha, while Smetannikov battles Oklahoma's No. 16 Julia Garcia-Ruiz.
