White Named to Ray Guy Award Semifinalist List
Nov 15, 2024 | Football
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Texas A&M's Tyler White has been named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, the Augusta Sports Council announced Friday morning. The Ray Guy Award is given annually to the nation's best punter.
White has averaged 45.3 yards per punt this season, including 10 boots of 50-plus yards and he has landed 19-of-31 inside the 20. The Southlake, Texas, native has only had one punt returned for 3 yards, while recording three touchbacks. White was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week after he wedged four of his five punts inside the 20, while booting three 50-plus yards in Texas A&M's victory over LSU, 38-23. The Tigers' average starting field position following his five punts was their own 13-yard line. The redshirt freshman has also earned three SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors this season, following wins over Arkansas, Missouri and LSU.
The candidates were evaluated by the Ray Guy Award committee on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis was placed on net punting average, percentage of punts downed or kicked out-of-bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
A national voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, national media and previous Ray Guy Award winners will decide the three award finalists who will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The voting body will then vote again to determine the winner of the Ray Guy Award. The winner will be announced live on Thursday, Dec. 12 during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
The Aggies are set to host New Mexico State Saturday, Nov. 16 at 6:45 p.m. on the SEC Network.
