LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Texas A&M men's and women's golf teams each have one student-athlete competing at the prestigious Patriot All-America Invitational from December 29-31. Freshmen Wheaton Ennis and Vanessa Borovilos were selected to play in the one-of-a-kind event at The Wigwam Resort.
Ennis competes in the men's division played at the par-72, 7,345-yard Gold Course. Borovilos hits the links in the women's division at the par-70, 6,000-yard Blue Course.
The Patriot All-America Invitational features PING All-Americans from the previous season in NCAA Divisions I, II and III, the NAIA, NJCAA and AJGA ranks as well as international team members and special invitees. The 54-hole amateur event is the first of its kind to combine the talents of 150 nationally recognized players (84 men and 72 women) in a festive, yet highly competitive holiday atmosphere.
The Aggie men's team boasts one champion in the 13-year history of the event. Cameron Champ sank a one-foot putt for par on the second playoff hole to win the 2016 edition of The Patriot. He entered the final round tied for sixth, three strokes back of second round leader Sahith Theegala. He closed out with a 4-under 66 with six birdies and bested Oklahoma State's Zachary Olsen in the playoff. This marks the fourth season for a women's division at the event.
Ennis has already landed SEC Freshman of the Week status once in his short collegiate stint. He finished in 11th place at the talent-laden the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational. He also posted a sixth-place showing at the Qubein Cup and tied for 13th at the Furman Intercollegiate.
During a productive summer, Ennis won the 100th Arizona Amateur Championship and advanced to the round of 32 at the 124th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Borovilos was recognized as a Golf Channel Preseason All-America Honorable Mention. She started the season with a 12th place finish at the prestigious Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Borovilos closed out the fall with a runner-up showing at the Charles Schwab Women's Collegiate at Ridglea Country Club, finishing two strokes behind teammate Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio to garner SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
The Etobicoke, Ontario, native advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 U.S. Girls Junior Championship and finished second at the Junior Orange Bowl International Championship last January. Borovilos was also tabbed as a 2024 Rolex Junior All-American.
Each player in the event honors a military hero. At the opening ceremony, each golfer receives and carries a commemorative golf bag emblazoned with the name, rank and branch of a fallen or wounded hero. Ennis honoring Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Russell L. Slay. He was killed in action on Nov. 9, 2004, along with seven other soldiers when their armored vehicles were attacked by terrorists in Fallujah, Iraw. Borovilos honors Army Corporal Evan A. Ashcraft. He died July 24, 2003, when his convoy was ambushed in Hawd, Iraq.
