Feb 15, 2024 | Baseball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 7 Texas A&M baseball team opens its 122nd season for the 19th straight year at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park as they host McNeese for a three-game set starting Friday at 6 p.m. Game two of the series is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m., while the finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
All three games will be broadcast on SECN+ and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 1150 AM/93.7 The Zone. Fans can also follow along with the series through live stats or on X, @AggieBaseball.
The Aggies, who have not opened the season away from the corner of Bush and Olsen since 2005, are 84-32-5 all-time on Opening Day and 34-4 when the season kicks off at Olsen Field. Since 2001, the Maroon & White are 21-2 in season openers. In home openers at Olsen Field, Texas A&M is 40-6 and have won nine of their last 10.
The Aggies have registered back-to-back three-game sweeps on Opening Weekend under head coach Jim Schlossnagle, who enters his third season at the helm. Since 2009, the Maroon & White have claimed 14 of 15 Opening Weekend series.
Friday's series opener marks the 31st meeting all-time and first since 2008 between Texas A&M and McNeese. The Aggies hold a 25-5 edge over the Cowboys and have won nine of the last 10 contests. All 30 games have been played at Olsen Field.
Texas A&M will open the 2024 campaign as a consensus Top 10 team after being ranked No. 7 by Perfect Game, No. 8 by D1Baseball, No. 10 by NCBWA and No. 10 by USA Today. The Aggies are one of six SEC programs to start the year as a consensus Top 10 team.
For the first time in program history, the Aggies will start the season with a pair of unanimous Preseason All-Americans in Jace LaViolette and Braden Montgomery. Since 2011, Texas A&M has had only two other unanimous Preseason All-Americans in Asa Lacy (2020) and Tyler Naquin (2012).
The All-American duo was also named to the Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, which recognizes the nation's best amateur player. This marks the first time a pair of Aggie teammates have earned a spot on the Preseason Watch List since Tyler Naquin, Ross Stripling and Michael Wacha in 2012. The last Texas A&M standout to be named to the preseason list was Asa Lacy in 2020.
Texas A&M is coming of its 37th trip to the NCAA Tournament after posting a 38-27 record a season ago. Schlossnagle and his staff return 18 players from a season ago and welcomed 26 newcomers in the offseason, including 16 freshmen.
