Late Offense Propels No. 7 Aggies Past McNeese, 6-1

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 7 Texas A&M baseball team (2-0) clinched its first series of the 2024 season Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over McNeese (0-2) from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
With the victory, the Aggies have now won 15 of their last 16 series on Opening Weekend, including all three under head coach Jim Schlossnagle.
Reliever Brock Peery earned the win in his Maroon & White debut after registering the final two outs of the seventh. Tarleton transfer Zane Badmaev logged his first save as an Aggie after logging two scoreless frames and three strikeouts.
Outfielder Braden Montgomery recorded the lone multi-hit performance of the afternoon for Texas A&M as the junior went 2-for-4 at the dish with two RBI. Ali Camarillo, Jace LaViolette and Max Kaufer also drove in a run apiece in the win.
Following four scoreless frames, the Aggies broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth behind a Kaufer RBI double down the left field line that plated Ryan Targac, who reached on a double in the same location.
After the Cowboys evened the score in the seventh on an RBI single, Ol' Sarge's charge responded in the bottom half of the frame with three runs to jump back in front, 4-1. LaViolette plated the winning run with a bases-loaded walk and Montgomery gave the Maroon & White some added cushion with a bloop two-run double to left.
Texas A&M tacked on two more runs in the eighth to make the final total, 6-1. Travis Chestnut, who pinch ran for Hayden Schott, swiped two bases and crossed the plate on a McNeese error. Later in the frame, Camarillo drove in the game's final run with an RBI single through the left side.
