Aggies Add Three Medals, School Record on Day Three of SEC Championships
Feb 21, 2024 | Men's Swimming and Diving
AUBURN – The No. 8 Texas A&M men's swimming & diving team earned three medals and saw the 50 free school record go down on night three of SEC Championships at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center. The Aggies currently sit in second behind Florida with 468 points.
Texas A&M went 1-2 in the 200 IM as Baylor Nelson clocked in at 1:41.72 to claim the top spot and defend his title from a year ago. Alex Sanchez stuck with his teammate in the lane next to him and was able to get his hand to the wall in a career-best 1:42.55 to secure the silver medal, the first medal of his career. The time stands as the fifth-fastest in program history.
Allen Bottego made his podium debut, bringing home a bronze medal on the 3-meter with a career-high score of 421.05. Victor Povzner was just behind him in fourth with a score of 412.40 and Takuto Endo rounded out the Aggies in the A-final, placing eighth with a score of 343.20.
After lowering his career-best time in the 50 free during prelims and as the 200 free relay leadoff, Connor Foote took down the school record when he finished atop the B-final with a time of 18.97. The sixth-fastest time of the night made Foote the first Aggie to go sub 19.0 in the event.
The 200 free relay team of Foote, Collin Fuchs, Carter Nelson and Baylor Nelson started the evening session with the second-fastest time in program history, going 1:16.59 to place fifth and pick up an NCAA A-cut in the event.
Logan Brown dropped time from the morning session, posting a 1:43.76 in the 200 IM final to place 10th. Vincent Ribeiro claimed 13th with a time of 1:44.75 and Munzy Kabbara finished second in the C-final with a time of 1:45.29.
Rhett Hensley earned a spot in the consolation final on the 3-meter, recording a score of 328.65 to finish 13thoverall. Matthew Aigner also got on the board for the Aggies, placing 24th with a score of 303.80.
Fuchs and Carter Nelson added points for the Aggies in the 50 free, as Fuchs went 19.71 to place 20th and Nelson clocked in at 19.85 to finish 22nd. Trey Dickey rounded out the Aggies in the finals, placing 22nd in the 500 free with a time of 4:19.72.

POST MEET QUOTES
Head coach Jay Holmes on the team's performance …
"We scored some very good points in our strengths tonight, the IM and in diving. We've had some really great moments already this week, but we are going to need a lot more of them. We have three more days of racing where every point matters.
"Our 200 free relay was good for us, we got the A-cut which for us is a good swim, and their splits were consistent all across the board. And Connor [Foote] being our first guy to ever go 18 in the 50 was a great swim.
"The swim of the day for our team is a hard one to pick. Connor's 50 is so noteworthy for our program, but it has to go to Alex Sanchez getting the silver medal behind only Baylor [Nelson], in the 200 IM. No one is the building thought Alex could pull that off, maybe not even Alex himself, but it was a great swim and for sure ignited our team.
"Allen [Bottego] medaling on the 3-meter tonight just shows how much quality depth we have in diving. We had two different guys podium on the 1-meter earlier in the meet. Diving continues to provide so much value to our team."
