No. 4 Aggies Shutout Wagner, 2-0, Clinch Series
Feb 24, 2024 | Baseball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 4 Texas A&M baseball team picked up its third shutout of the 2024 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Wagner Saturday afternoon from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. With the win, the Aggies (6-0) clinched the series against the Seahawks (0-5).
The Maroon & White's three shutouts through the first six games match the 1949 and 1983 teams for the most in program history. The Aggies six runs allowed through the first six games are the fewest since 2011.
Justin Lamkin earned the win after striking out five over five scoreless frames. Through two starts this season, Lamkin has yet to allow an earned run. In relief, Evan Aschenbeck picked up the save after tossing four scoreless innings and striking out seven.
The lone runs of the afternoon came in the opening frame as the Maroon & White took advantage of a pair of Wagner errors. After Gavin Grahovac led off the frame with a double and Jace LaViolette reached via a hit-by-pitch, the duo advanced to second and third on a throwing error by the Seahawk pitcher. Montgomery followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate Grahovac.
On the play, a fielding error by the Wagner center fielder allowed LaViolette to cross the plate for the second and final run of the day.
In the sixth, Wagner threatened as they loaded the bases with only one out in the frame. Aschenbeck, who entered for Lamkin in the inning, struck out the next two batters swinging to keep the Seahawks off the board.
The sixth was the only inning that the duo of Lamkin and Aschenbeck allowed a Wagner runner to advance past first.
Inside the Box Score
The Maroon & White will go for their second sweep of the season tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Blue Bell Park.
