No. 3 Aggies Even Series with No. 8 Florida, 10-6
Mar 16, 2024 | Baseball
With the victory, Jim Schlossnagle became the fourth head coach in program history to reach 100 wins in the Maroon & White.
Aschenbeck earned the win in relief after striking out six Gators over four scoreless innings. The scoreless appearance marked the fifth of the year for the senior. Right-hander Josh Stewart followed Aschenbeck in relief with three strikeouts in a scoreless inning of work and Shane Sdao finished off the final 1.2 frames for his first save of the year. Starter Tanner Jones earned his third straight no-decision after allowing five runs over 2.1 innings of work.
Braden Montgomery and Ali Camarillo each logged a game-high tying three RBI on the night to pace the offensive attack for the Aggies. For Montgomery, the multi-RBI performance marked the junior's team-leading 11th of the year. Freshman Gavin Grahovac belted his third homer in as many games in the win, finishing the night 2-for-5 at the dish.
Following a leadoff double from Grahovac and a hit-by-pitch by Jace LaViolette, Montgomery put the Aggies on the board first with a three-run homer down the line in right. The long ball marked the eighth of the year for the junior and traveled 421 feet.
The Gators wasted no time answering in the bottom half of the frame, tying the game with a three-run homer just four pitches into the inning.
After a scoreless second, the top of the order put the Maroon & White back in front as Grahovac and LaViolette went back-to-back with solo home runs. The back-to-back homers marked the second time Texas A&M accomplished the feat this season.
The Aggies went on to add three more runs in the frame courtesy of a bases-loaded RBI walk from Jackson Appel and RBI groundouts from Hank Bard and Camarillo as the lead jumped to 8-3.
Florida followed with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to trim the advantage to 8-5 but Aschenbeck, who came on in relief after the first two runners reached base, limited further damage.
Aschenbeck combined with Stewart to stymie the Gator offense for five shutout innings as the Maroon & White took an 8-5 lead into the ninth.
In the ninth, Camarillo added insurance for the Aggies with a two-run single through the right side to stretch the lead to 10-5. Florida responded with a run in the bottom half but Sdao sealed the 10-6 win with his first save of the year.
