BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Fightin' Texas Aggies blasted three home runs to claim the series opener over No. 25 Auburn, 5-1, Friday night at Davis Diamond.
No. 14 Texas A&M (26-4, 6-1 SEC) trailed 1-0 in the fourth before Trinity Cannon sounded the alarm with a solo jack and her team-leading ninth home run of the season. Kylei Griffin put the Aggies in the driver's seat with a pinch-hit two-run moonshot that sailed over the videoboard landing in the Reed Arena parking lot as Texas A&M led after the fifth frame, 3-1. Julia Cottrill added to the party in the sixth inning with an opposite field two-run tater as the Aggies were in control, 5-1, heading into the final inning.
The home run derby is Texas A&M's 12th multi-home run game of the season and sixth with at least three bell ringers.
Auburn (15-7-1, 2-5 SEC) gave it a fighter's last chance with the bases loaded after a fielder's choice and a pair of singles, before Emiley Kennedy answered back with a strikeout and fly-out to end the game.
Kennedy earned her 14th win of the season, while tossing her 13th complete game going 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and yielding two walks.
Ol' Sarge's charges fended off every Tiger attack, including an inning-ending double play in the opening frame and a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning as Jazmine Hill nailed a runner down at the plate trying to tag from third base.
