BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Behind a strong performance on the mound from Tanner Jones, the No. 3 Texas A&M baseball team blanked No. 6 Vanderbilt (26-9, 8-6), 9-0, Saturday evening in front of 8,075 strong at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park to clinch the series.
The shutout was the second straight for the Aggies (31-4, 10-4), marking the first time they've accomplished the feat in SEC action since 2016. On the year, Texas A&M has totaled a nation-leading eight shutouts.
Jones delivered his best performance in the Maroon & White as the junior scattered six hits over 7.1 scoreless innings to go along with five strikeouts. The 7.1 frames were a season-high for Jones, while the scoreless appearance marked his third of the year. In relief, Evan Aschenbeck struck out three over 1.2 scoreless innings to complete the shutout.
The Aggies picked up right where they left off a night ago as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening frame. The rookie Gavin Grahovac set the tone with a monster solo homer that cleared the scoreboard in left and traveled 432 feet. The long ball marked his 12th of the year.
Later in the frame, Jackson Appel stretched the lead to 2-0 as the senior plated Jace LaViolette, who reached on a hit-by-pitch with an RBI single to center. After the Maroon & White loaded the bases, Ali Camarillo brought home the third run of the frame with an RBI walk. Texas A&M tacked on two more runs on a Caden Sorrell sac fly that featured a throwing error by the Commodores as the lead bloomed to 5-0.
In the fourth, Travis Chestnut added to the advantage with a 429-foot solo shot that cleared the scoreboard in left. The long ball marked the first of the year for the senior and the second of his Texas A&M career.
