BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 11 Texas A&M women's tennis team secured its third SEC regular season title in a row after sweeping No. 29 Alabama, 4-0, at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Sunday. The Aggies became the first team to three-peat since joining the SEC in 2012.
Texas A&M (20-6, 12-1 SEC) came out swinging to take an early lead over the Crimson Tide (14-9, 5-8 SEC) in doubles play. Lucciana Perez/Jeanette Mireles kicked things off with a 6-3 victory over Petra Sedlackova/Anna Parkhomenko on court 2. Following close behind, Nicole Khirin/Sydney Fitch took down Ola Pitak/Klara Milicevic on court 3 to clinch the doubles point and finish SEC play 9-2.
Striking first in singles was Mireles, who made quick work of Parkhomenko on court 5 (6-0, 6-0) to claim her 10th win in league play, extending her win-streak to five and doubling the Aggie advantage, 2-0.
No. 19 Khirin kept things moving on court 2, defeating No. 102 Sedlackova in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to grab the third point of the day and cap off her SEC season with a 10-2 record.
Moments later, Perez secured the title with her eighth-straight victory, topping Pitak on court 4 (6-3, 6-2) to give the Maroon & White their 53rd-consecutive win at home.
Both No. 1 Mary Stoiana and No. 44 Mia Kupres were leading their matches before the overall result was clinched.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Mark Weaver on winning a third straight SEC title …
"It has not been easy in the previous years, but we are a very resilient group and we've done nothing but get better every day. We are truly playing the best tennis we've played all season and are headed in the right direction.
"I think our team chemistry has clicked in the last six weeks, and we have improved in several positions. We are hard workers and always try to find ways to get better every day. If we felt sorry for ourselves early in the season, we wouldn't be standing here with our third-straight trophy."
