ATHENS – The No. 12 Texas A&M women's tennis team secured its spot in the SEC Tournament Final for the fourth-straight year after claiming its 10th-consecutive victory over No. 14 Florida Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, 4-2.
Texas A&M (22-6) went down early against the Gators (16-8) after dropping the doubles point. The team responded with four points in singles play to claim its spot in the finals. No. 1 Mary Stoiana was the first to strike for the Aggies, downing No. 71 Sara Dahlstrom on court 2 for her ninth-straight win (6-2, 6-0) to tie things up.
Lucciana Perez followed Stoiana's lead and continued her own hot streak, grabbing her 10th win in a row against Gator freshman No. 111 Qavia Lopez on court 5 (6-0, 7-5) to give A&M the lead, 2-1.
No. 41 Mia Kupres joined the party to put the Maroon & White one point away from victory after making quick work of Alicia Dudeney on court 4 (6-2, 6-2).
The Gators responded with a point of their own, but it was not enough as Carson Branstine finished the job for the Aggies taking down No. 8 Rachel Gailis on court 1 in dramatic fashion (6-3, 3-6, 6-4). She claimed her first victory of the season which ensured the Aggies fourth-straight trip to the championship round.
Jeanette Mireles was leading her match against Malwina Rowinska on court 6 before the overall result was clinched.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Mark Weaver on the team's composure to get the win …
"It was a great team win for our group. The doubles did not go the way that we would have liked, however it was great composure once again in the singles and we ultimately were able to get four wins against a very good Florida team. Now it's rest and recovery time to get ready to compete for the SEC Tournament title tomorrow."
Up Next
The Aggies will take on the winner of No. 1 seeded Georgia and No. 4 Tennessee in the SEC Tournament Finals. The Maroon & White have faced the Bulldogs in the tournament final the last three years, and seek their second tournament title in program history tomorrow with first serve set for 3:30 p.m.
