Women’s Golf Finishes First Round of NCAAs in Second Behind Cernousek and Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio
May 17, 2024 | Women's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. – The No. 13 Texas A&M women's golf team finished the first round of the 2024 NCAA Championships on Friday in second behind top-three performances from Adela Cernousek and Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
"That was probably one of the best rounds, considering the situation, that I've been a part of," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We didn't get off to the cleanest of starts, but we had a heck of a back nine. Our scorecard was pretty clean. We need to clean up some putting stuff, but if you would have told me that was what we would have shot starting out, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. I'm super proud of the fight, because that finish was really tough. It was getting cold, and the wind was up. Finishing clean helped that scorecard look really good."
The Aggies were one stroke behind Clemson (-8) for the top spot on the team leaderboard. The Maroon & White were 10 strokes ahead of 15th place, which will be the first cut after round three of stroke play. They will need to stay within the top eight to qualify for match play at the conclusion of 72 holes of stroke play.
As a team, A&M was the lone program in the 30-squad field that did not record a double bogey or worse. The placing marks the lowest after a round at NCAAs for the Aggies since match play was added to the championships in 2015.
Adela Cernousek and Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio were dominant at the NCAA course. Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio started out on fire, shooting a 4-under 32 on the back nine, which the team started on. Cernousek followed that up with a 4-under 32 on front nine, including a stretch of birdies on five of six holes from No. 18 to No. 5. The pair were tied for third on the individual leaderboard at 4-under 68. Florida State's Lottie Woad led all golfers at 7-under 65 after day one.
Zoe Slaughter shot even-par and tied for 38th and the final counting score for the Aggies was Blanca Fernández García-Poggio who went 1-over 73 and held onto a share of 58th. Jennie Park rounded out the lineup knotted up for 144th.
The Maroon & White will tee off at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday to begin the second round. Live stats for the event can be found at Golfstat.com. Additionally, the tournament will be televised on Golf Channel from 5-9 p.m., Monday through Wednesday.
