BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver announced the addition of James Wilson as the program's new associate head coach Friday.
"I'm honored to join this incredible group and to be a part of such a prestigious university in Texas A&M," Wilson said. "The tradition of excellence is second-to-none and is something I've always admired. To be able to represent the Aggies gives me the upmost pride. I've got to thank Coach Weaver for giving me this opportunity. He's one of the most genuine, honest people I've ever known, and I can't wait to work alongside him."
Wilson brings 16 years of collegiate tennis experience with him to Aggieland, including a three-year playing career at Texas Tech and 13 years of coaching. He most recently served as the head coach of the Georgia State men's team. Prior to his time with the Panthers, Wilson spent three seasons at USF as the associate head coach where he helped the Bulls notch back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and secure an upset win over Duke in the opening round.
"Obviously the bar has been set very high and we have to be able to sustain that level," Wilson continued. "Our goal is going to be to continue to win SEC Championships and be amongst the elite of college tennis. I'm confident that with the leadership and support of this great university that we will continue on that path."
Wilson has championships experience of his own, winning two-straight conference titles during his head coaching stint at Utah State, where he also secured NCAA Tournament berths in both seasons. The Aggies also set their program record for wins in a single season under Wilson's tutelage, accumulating 23 victories in the 2016-17 season. Utah State's success under Wilson's leadership was recognized by the league, as he was named Mountain West Coach of the Year in the 2018 season.
"I'm happy to announce the addition of James Wilson as our new associate head coach," Weaver said. "James is one of the most dedicated and hardworking coaches in college tennis. Anyone who knows him [Wilson] or has been around him knows that this is a tremendous hire and exactly what we need here in Aggieland to help us continue to achieve the championship level success that we have been able to here for quite some time."
