Women’s Golf Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships for Third-Straight Year
May 08, 2024 | Women's Golf
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 12 Texas A&M women's golf team punched its ticket to the 2024 NCAA Championships for the third-consecutive year on Wednesday after finishing fifth at the Bryan Regional at Traditions Club.
"It wasn't the ideal start," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We compounded our poor start with some putting mistakes, but we told them to stay patient. The front nine was going to get its licks, but the back nine was going to present some opportunities. I am proud of them for staying in it and am glad we have another tee time in California next week."
The Aggies began the day shooting 10-over thru the first three holes, erasing the 12-stroke cushion they had created in the first two rounds from the cut. Eventually, Ohio State would overtake the fifth and final advancing spot near the turn and A&M was facing a four-stroke deficit.
Adela Cernousek turned on the jets and put the team on her back at that point, knocking down four-straight birdies on Nos. 9, 10, 11 and 12. Her day started with a triple bogey on No. 2, but the middle of her round helped steady her day and put them in a tie with the Buckeyes.
Cernousek would eventually finish out the round 1-under 71 and 7-under 209 for the tournament. The junior tied for third on the individual leaderboard. Her performance led A&M to outperform the sixth-place Ohio State for the final spot from the Bryan Regional to advance to NCAAs.
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio, Blanca Fernández García-Poggio and Jennie Park all tied for 28th and went 6-over 222 for the 54-hole regional. Zoe Slaughter rounded out the lineup with a share of 39th at 9-over 225.
No. 5 LSU won the regional, posting an 8-over 856. It was led by No. 1 amateur in the world Ingrid Lingblad who took home the individual title at 12-under 204. SMU, Clemson and Vanderbilt were the other three teams to advance to NCAAs. Kansas State's Carla Bernat was the top individual to advance to nationals.
The Aggies will head to Carlsbad, California, May 17-22 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. Texas A&M has advanced to the semifinals of NCAAs for the last two years. The format consists of 72 holes of stroke play and three rounds of match play to determine the team champion.
