Jun 14, 2024 | Swimming and Diving
INDIANAPOLIS – Eighteen current Texas A&M swimmers and three pros will be in action at U.S. Olympic Team Trials, held at Lucas Oil Stadium. The meet begins on Saturday, June 15 and runs through Sunday, June 23 when the U.S. Olympic Team will be finalized.
Baylor Nelson and Chloe Stepanek highlight the group of current student-athletes as Nelson qualified in five events and Stepanek notched qualifying times in four events. Nelson boasts top-12 times in both the 200m free and 200m IM after clocking in at 1:46.51 in the 200m free at Phillips 66 National Championships in Indy last summer to earn a spot on Team USA for World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. He went 1:59.13 in the 200m IM at the national championship meet to earn a top-10 finish lower his best time. Stepanek went a personal-best 1:58.73 in the 200m free at a long course meet with Georgia Tech last fall and lowered her top time in the 100m free at Phillips 66 National Championships, going 54.63 to hold top-25 times in each event entering Trials.
Aggie pros Shaine Casas, Breeja Larson and Caroline Theil will be in action this week. Casas has qualified in four events, boasting the top qualifying time in the nation in the 200m IM (1:56.06) as well as the No. 2 time in the 100m fly (50.80). Larson, who helped Team USA claim a gold medal as a member of the 400m medley relay at the 2012 Games, returns to the pool to compete in the 100m breast after posting a qualifying time of 1:10.08 at Speedo Sectionals in Phoenix earlier this year. Theil punched her ticket to Trials at the 2023 World University Games, going 2:14.28 in the 200m IM to earn her spot.
Recent Texas A&M graduate Abby Grottle holds the 25th-fastest time in the 800m free after going 8:40.70 at Phillips 66 National Championships a year ago. She has also posted qualifying times in the 400m free and 1500m free. Rising sophomore Ben Scholl punched his ticket to Olympic Trials after going 22.39, which ranks 22nd among 50m free qualifying times, at the Lone Star Last Chance meet in March.
Prelims will begin daily at 10 a.m. CT with finals slated for 6:45 p.m. CT. A complete broadcast schedule can be found here, while more information about the meet and results can be found here.
