Three Aggies Earn Gatorade Softball Player of the Year Honors

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M softball incoming freshmen Taylor Brown (Missouri), Sydney Lessentine (New Mexico) and Kate Munnerlyn (California) earned Gatorade Softball Player of the Year honors in their respective state.
Brown, a two-time Gatorade Softball Player of the Year winner, led Washington High School to a 38-1-1 record and the 4A state championship this past season. The right-handed pitcher dominated the circle with a 24-0 record and a 0.50 ERA, while recording a program-record 263 strikeouts. As a first baseman, she batted .548 at the dish with 62 RBI and 16 home runs. Brown was named the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Metro Player of the Year. She maintained a 3.67 GPA in the classroom, while serving as a member of Fellowship Christian Athletes and volunteering locally with Link Crew, a student orientation leadership council.
Lessentine led Alamogordo High School to a 27-5 record and a berth in the Class 5A state championship in 2024. The right-handed pitcher and second baseman compiled a 22-2 record in the circle with a 1.89 ERA in 152.0 innings pitched. She struck out 259 batters, while yielding 19 walks to finish with .763 WHIP. Lessentine recorded a .369 batting average at the plate with seven home runs, 49 RBI and a 1.172 OPS. A four-time All-District selection, she made the 2024 New Mexico High School Coaches Association Senior All-Star Team. Lessentine volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and donated her time at a community thrift store. She maintained a 3.93 GPA in the classroom.
Munnerlyn, a left-handed pitcher, led St. Francis to a 28-1 record and the Central Coast Section Open Division Tournament championship in 2024. She was undefeated in the circle with a 15-0 record, while boasting a 0.52 ERA, 183 strikeouts in 107.1 innings pitched. Munnerlyn added six home runs and 35 RBI, while hitting .356 at the dish. She volunteered at Martha's Kitchen preparing food for the homeless and donated her time at the Order of Malta where she assembled hygiene kits for people in need. Munnerlyn earned a 3.60 GPA in the classroom.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and determine the state winners in each sport.
