Aggie Men Win 4x400m National Title, Place Fifth in Team Standings at NCAA Championships

EUGENE – The Texas A&M track & field men's 4x400m relay team won the NCAA title with a record-setting performance to notch a fifth-place overall team finish Friday at Hayward Field.
As all eyes fell to the final men's event of the NCAA Championships, the 4x400m relay, the Aggies were the ones who left their mark. The Maroon & White went out fast thanks to an opening leg of 45.66 from Jevon O'Bryant. He handed the baton to Cutler Zamzow who carried that momentum with a 45.16 split of his own. Kimar Farquharson stepped up third and kept close on the heels of Florida, running 44.38 on his leg. All eyes fell to Auhmad Robinson on the anchor as the junior had work to do on the final 400m. He closed the gap through the opening 300m and with the finish line in sight, he stunned the crowd with a final kick to overtake the Gators on the home straight to cross the line with a staggering 43.20 split. The team finished the race in 2:58.37 which downed the school record and ranks as the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history.
Ja'Qualon Scott was the early tone setter for the men in the 110m hurdles. The Houston, Texas, native coming out of lane three made his way through the field, jumping two spots from his qualifying position to place third in a personal best 13.27 to secure First Team All-America honors. Scott continued his impressive day in the hurdle double, as he climbed from ninth to fourth in the 400m hurdles with his second career best of the day, crossing the line in 49.08. His mark moved him up to No. 3 in the A&M record books and ensured his second First Team all-America honor of the day.
Next up on the track was Sam Whitmarsh and Kimar Farquharson in the 800m finals. In a tightly contested event, the group rounded the final bend together, but Whitmarsh managed to navigate through the pack and was narrowly beaten at the line as he took second in 1:45.10. Farquharson ran just shy of his personal best, as he finished seventh in 1:46.38. Both men secured First Team All-America honors for their top-eight results.
The Aggies men concluded the event fifth in the team standings with 31 points, as the 4x400m relay scored 10 points, Whitmarsh claimed eight in the 800m, Scott added six in the 110m hurdles and five in the 400m hurdles and Farquharson secured two of his own in the 800m.
The women's heptathlon also got underway on day three, as national leader Timara Chapman put on a show for the crowd. The senior kickstarted her championships in the 100m hurdles, securing her first personal best of the day crossing the line in 13.40. She doubled down right away, clearing 1.81m/5-11.25 in the high jump for her second career mark of the afternoon, the jump also moved Chapman up to No. 10 on A&M's all-time performers list in the event. Continuing her fast start, she recorded the second-longest toss of her career in the shot put (13.72m/45-0.25) and wrapped up the day with another best in the 200m crossing the line in 24.18. Chapman sits in first place at the conclusion of the first four events with 3,794 points.
Joniar Thomas also got her heptathlon campaign started, with marks of 14.03 in the 100m hurdles, 1.63m/5-4.25 in the high jump and 12.04m/39-6 in the shot put. She also rounded out her day in the 200m where she ran a blistering personal best of 23.57 which was the fastest of all heptathletes. She enters day two in 15th with a total of 3,431 points.
