Aggies in Fourth After Round Two of Carmel Cup
Aug 31, 2024 | Women's Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Texas A&M women's golf team moved into fourth after shooting an 11-over 371 in the second round of the Carmel Cup at the Pebble Beach Golf Links on Saturday.
"Course played tougher today than yesterday and we just had some untidiness out there," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We had a great finish though and that has kept us in the hunt for tomorrow. We are nowhere near where we are going to be come April and May, so to be able to be in a competitive environment like this early on in the year is all you can ask for. We just need to clean some stuff up and get off to a good start on Sunday."
The Aggies were seven strokes behind Mississippi State in the team standings for the lead and also stood behind Arkansas (+16) and Vanderbilt (+18). Texas A&M has finished in the top four of every season-opening tournament in the Chadwell era.
Cernousek stayed below par thru 36 with a 2-over 74 in round two, bringing her to 2-under 142 heading into Sunday. The senior was tied for third and was six strokes back of Mississippi State's Julia Lopez Ramirez (-8) for the individual lead.
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio carded a team-best 1-under 71 on Saturday which gave her a spot within the top 10 into a tie for ninth. The sophomore broke par after a birdie on the par-5 No. 18 to wrap up the day.
Vanessa Borovilos and Lauren Nguyen both fired a 3-over 75 and held a share of 11th and 17th, respectively. Kynadie Adams locked in a 4-over 76 and was knotted up for 38th. Mia Nixon's round was highlighted by an ace on the 180-yard No. 12 that landed on the front right of the green and then took a couple of hops before falling into the cup. The redshirt sophomore was tied for 34th at the end of the day.
