Aggies ride back-to-back shutouts into New Britain
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Texas A&M women's soccer team makes the second trip to the Nutmeg State in program history when Maroon & White play the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils Thursday evening. First kick at CCSU Soccer Field is slated for 6 p.m.
Texas A&M journeyed into New England for a pair of matches for the third time in program history and the first time since 2000. In 1995, the Aggies played in the UMass Classic in Amherst, dropping the opener to host Massachusetts, 2-1, before topping New Hampshire, 4-0. In 2000, the Maroon & White win road games against Hartford (2-1) in Connecticut, and Harvard (3-0) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
This marks the Aggies first game against any Northeast Conference opponent, either current or past members.
The Aggies ride into Connecticut on a two-match win streak with 2-0 wins against TCU and Louisiana Tech. All of Texas A&M's wins have been shutouts with three goalkeepers keeping clean sheets. Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week has two blankings while Grace McClellan and Maysen Veronda have one apiece.
Sydney Becerra leads the offense with seven points on three goals and one assist. MaKhiya McDonald, Mia Pante and Taylor Pounds all have five points on two goals and one assist.
With his win last Sunday against Louisiana Tech, G Guerrieri moved past retired Florida coach Becky Burleigh for fourth place on the NCAA Division I wins list. He also elevated to No. 8 on the career coaching victory chart among all NCAA divisions.
Central Connecticut is off to an uncharacteristically skittish start at 0-5-1. The 11-time NCAA Tournament participants went over five-and-a-half games into the season before scoring their first and only goal of the season in a 1-1 tie against UMass Lowell. The losses have come against Fairfield (1-0), Army (2-0), Manhattan (1-0), Holy Cross (2-0) and Brown (2-0). Sabrina Krause accounted for the lone goal. Melia Ford has been the top goalkeeper, logging a 1.33 goals-against average and 25 saves in 405 minutes in the woodwork.
The Blue Devils have experienced NCAA Tournament success. Most recently, the Blue Devils stunned No. 21 Rutgers in 2019 with a game-winner with 90 seconds to win a first-round match. The next game West Virginia needed double overtime to top CCSU 1-0.
The match is available NEC Front Row. A radio call of the match airs on Gospel 97.3 FM in the Brazos Valley with the audio also available in the 12th Man Mobile app.
