Aggies Fall to No. 8 Texas on Record-Breaking Night, 3-1
Sep 27, 2024 | Volleyball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M volleyball team broke the program's attendance record in a hard-fought loss to the No. 8 Longhorns Friday evening in Reed Arena, 3-1 (25-16, 14-25, 25-23, 25-20).
The Aggies (9-2, 0-1 SEC) fell just short in a back-and-forth match with the Longhorns (6-3, 1-0 SEC) on a milestone-setting night in Reed Arena, as the 12th Man helped shatter the program record attendance with 9,236 fans in the stands, besting the previous record by 2,414. The total also set a new NCAA volleyball regular-season attendance benchmark in the state of Texas.
The Longhorns were the aggressors at the start of the match, pushing out to a lead prompting head coach Jamie Morrison to take his first timeout of the match, 12-5. Texas held its momentum and closed out the opener, 25-16.
Needing a response, the Aggies did just that behind a 5-1 run to open the set forcing Texas' first timeout. A&M piled on the pressure, extending their advantage as the Longhorns called their second break, 12-4. The onslaught continued as A&M led by as many as 12 behind Logan Lednicky's six kills (21-9). The Maroon & White held its rhythm and tied the match (25-14), 1-1.
Back-and-forth volleyball opened the third frame, as the Aggies won the race to 10 (10-9). Texas responded with a streak to lead at the media timeout, 15-11. The Longhorns forged some separation, however an answer from A&M knotted the teams late at 22. Texas responded to the Aggies pressure, retaking the lead in the match (25-23), 2-1.
The team's battled once again, finding themselves all square at 13. Texas found a slight advantage, as coach Morrison called a timeout, 18-14. A&M continued to fight into the deficit, however the Longhorns closed the set (25-20) and match, 3-1.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Jamie Morrison on today's match …
"There's just a different feeling when you walk into a building and its already half full and I think in that moment I was just like 'wow'. I found myself getting fired up in moments when we were celebrating, and realized we had everyone celebrating with us."
Morrison on today's match …
"The first set, the players were taking it all in and I think it took them a little bit to get settled in. We like to be aggressive, but we have to dial it back and keep the ball in the court. We played well for long stretches of tonight's game, and volleyball is all about extending the runs. My frustration right now is not that were not there, it is that we are right there, we just need to tip it over the top of the hill, to the point where we start winning these harder games."
PLAYER'S QUOTES
Junior L/DS Ava Underwood on cleaning up the little details …
"With our style of volleyball, errors are going to come and that's just a part of it. We go up, swing high and hard and serve low and flat to the net. Now, we need to clean it up just a little bit when it comes down to sets that are super close at the end."
Junior OPP Logan Lednicky on the 12th Man…
"It was unreal, over 9,200 people is insane. It was also such a fun atmosphere with the fans. You could really feel their support and it definitely makes a difference."
