QUEENS, N.Y. – Texas A&M men's tennis pro Jackson Withrow and partner Nathaniel Lammons advanced to the semifinals of the 2024 US Open after a three-set thriller to defeat the pairing of Nikola Mektic and Wesley Koolhof, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, Tuesday.
Withrow and Lammons dominated the first frame, cruising to a 6-1 victory. The second set went the other way, with Mektic and Koolhof grinding out a 7-6 (5-7) win to even the match. The two teams went back-and-forth in the third to a 4-4 standing, but Withrow and his partner took the next two games to advance in the tournament.
Withrow will make his first semifinal appearance at a Grand Slam and will be taking on the Australian duo of Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell Thursday for a chance to compete for the title. Withrow is ranked as the No. 26 doubles player in the world and has won four titles this year with Lammons.
Incoming freshman Theo Papamalamis advanced in the junior boys' singles and doubles brackets Tuesday. Papamalamis won a three-set bout in singles over Hoyoung Roh, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, to move onto the third round and beat William Rejchtman Vinciguerra and Ivan Lutkin, 6-2, 6-4, alongside partner Petr Brunclik to claim a spot in the second round of doubles.
