MELBOURNE, Fla. – Texas A&M's Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Mia Nixon led the Aggies into a tie for third at the Moon Golf Invitational Sunday at the Suntree Country Club.
"We started on the back nine and got through the toughest stretch early which gave us some good momentum," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "We took advantage of the down-wind par-5 on 18 that helped us going into the turn. The course played hard, so I was proud our intentionality to stay focused and aggressive. Cata and Mia were really good. I walked all 18 holes with Mia, and she looks very solid."
The Maroon & White shot 4-over 292 as a team with Fernández García-Poggio and Nixon both firing an even-par 72. The duo was tied for 11th after 18 holes and had the squad six shots behind No. 7 Florida State for the lead. UCF (+3), Ole Miss (+4) and Virginia (+5) rounded out the top five.
The Aggies started the day on the back nine and the difference proved to come right before the turn on the par-5 No. 18 hole. All five counting scores went under par on 18, including an eagle by Kynadie Adams that helped Texas A&M pick up five strokes before heading up to the front nine.
Adams and Nguyen each turned in a 2-over 74 and held onto a share of 29th heading into Monday. Vanessa Borovilos rounded out the lineup at 4-over 76 and tied for 47th.
Nicole Gal and Caitlyn Macnab of Ole Miss paced all golfers with a 2-under 70. Texas A&M was the top placing SEC school after round one alongside the Rebels.
