BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team battled through tough conditions and an 1:26 weather delay en route to a 4-3 victory over Cal Poly Saturday afternoon from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Â
With the win, the Aggies (5-0) secured the series victory and extended their winning streak against non-conference opponents to 35.
Â
Clayton Freshcorn earned the win in relief after allowing one hit over 1.2 scoreless frames, while Luke Jackson picked up his first career save. Starter Justin Lamkin earned a no-decision despite recording the Maroon & White's first quality start of the season. The lefty allowed one run, unearned, over six innings of work to go along with four strikeouts.
Â
In the third, the Mustangs (1-5) pushed across the game's first run courtesy of a Texas A&M error. The Aggies evened the score in the sixth as Wyatt Henseler, who reached on a double, came around to score on a two-out RBI double from Blake Binderup.
Â
Cal Poly loaded the bases with only one-out in the seventh, forcing the Maroon & White to turn to Freshcorn on the mound. The right-hander minimized the damage as the Mustangs were only able to scratch across one run on a sacrifice fly to regain the lead 2-1.
Â
Ol' Sarge's charges responded in the bottom half with three runs to jump in front 4-2. After Kaeden Kent opened the frame with a single, Jamal George plated the junior with an RBI double into the gap in left. George later came around to score along with Sawyer Farr, who reached on a hit-by-pitch, on a two-run double from Gavin Grahovac.
Â
In the bottom half of the eighth, a lightning strike forced the contest into an 1:26 weather delay. Out of the delay, a two-out Texas A&M error allowed the Mustangs to trim the lead to one, 4-3. Jackson went on to retire the final batter of the day on a flyout to seal the win for the Maroon & White.
