NASHVILLE – A short-handed Texas A&M women's basketball team dropped a 91-58 decision to the Vanderbilt Commodores inside Memorial Gymnasium Thursday night.
Â
The Aggies (10-17, 3-12 SEC) entered the fray with just seven players available, taking the court without their two leading scorers in SEC play, Aicha Coulibaly and Solé Williams.
Â
Lauren Ware led the Maroon & White with 16 points, nine rebounds and added two blocks and two steals. Jada Malone added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Â
The teams played on an even keel in the first quarter before the Commodores closed out with a 5-0 run in the final 1:18 to take a 16-11 advantage into the break. Ware paced the Aggies with four points in the opening period.
Â
After Janae Kent sank a 3-pointer for the Aggies to cut the deficit to 19-16 at the 8:46 mark of the second quarter, Vanderbilt (20-9, 7-8 SEC) went on a 7-0 run, staking claim to its first double-digit lead.
Â
Another surge, this one 9-0, allowed the Commodores to stretch the gap to 35-18 with 3:23 remaining in the first half. Texas A&M coagulated the bleeding with a 7-0 run. Kyndall Hunter sparked the outburst with an old-fashioned 3-point player. A jumper by Kent and layup by Malone shaved the deficit down to 10 points before a Commodores' layup in the closing moments gave Vanderbilt a 37-25 lead at the intermission.
Â
The Aggies stayed in the fight early in the third quarter, closing the gap back to 45-31 at the 6:43 mark. Vanderbilt responded by closing out the period on a 25-8 run, inflating the cushion to 70-39 at the final break.
Â
Ware, Malone and Sahara Jones accounted for all of Texas A&M's scoring in the fourth quarter. Ware tallied seven points while Malone and Jones scored six apiece. Malone was 3-for-3 from the field in the last stanza.
Â
Texas A&M returns home for senior day Sunday at 2 p.m. inside Reed Arena. Six seniors will be honored during the pregame festivities.
