Harris Claims Heptathlon Title on Second Day of SEC Indoor Championships

Blake Harris claimed gold in the heptathlon to lead the way for the Aggies on the second day of competition at SEC Indoor Championships Friday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility. The men's squad sits in first entering the final day of competition with 40.5 points, while the women's team is tied for sixth with 13 points.

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Blake Harris claimed gold in the heptathlon to lead the way for the Aggies on the second day of competition at SEC Indoor Championships Friday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility. The men's squad sits in first entering the final day of competition with 40.5 points, while the women's team is tied for sixth with 13 points.
 
Harris claimed A&M's first SEC indoor heptathlon title, as he capped off a two-day performance with a point total of 5,800 to ensure gold. The junior carried 3,150 points into the second day, with three events remaining on the schedule opened by the 60m hurdles where he dominated the final heat as he tied his personal best time of 7.85 to win the event. He followed that up with a career mark in the pole vault, clearing 4.60m/15-1 which was almost a foot more than his previous best. He concluded the heptathlon in the 1,000m, crossing the line in 2:43.00 to secure the overall win.
 
The Maroon & White loaded up the men's 400m final with four Aggies advancing. Auhmad Robinson led the way with the second-fastest time in prelims, going 45.62, and Cutler Zamzow was right behind him in third with a personal-best 46.08. Hossam Eddine Hatib rounded out the top four with a time of 46.16 and Antonie Nortje went 46.21 to punch his ticket to Saturday's session.
 
Luca Santorum and Cooper Cawthra secured their spots in Saturday's mile final with two of the top three times in prelims. Santorum went a near-personal-best 4:01.53 and Cawthra posted a time of 4:01.69. On the women's side, Debora Cherono clocked the sixth-fastest time of the prelim, going 4:41.47, and Elise Smoot was right behind her in seventh, moving into No. 3 on A&M's all-time performers list with a personal-best 4:44.81 to book their spots in the final.
 
Jaiya Covington posted the No. 2 time in the women's 60m hurdles to secure her spot in the final and Ja'Qualon Scott clocked the fourth-fastest time in the men's event to advance, going 7.66.
 
In the men's 800m Sam Whitmarsh and Kimar Farquharson won their prelim heats as Whitmarsh crossed the line at 1:49.40 and Farquharson clocked a 1:49.82 to advance.

The Aggies return to the Fasken indoor facility tomorrow for the final day of the SEC Indoor Championships.
