VIRGINIA BEACH – The Texas A&M track & field team had an impressive showing on the opening day of the NCAA Indoor Championships Friday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The men's squad sits in third entering the final day of competition with 10 points, while the women rank 10th with eight points.

The Aggies made their presence felt on the first day of competition, as Sofia Yakushina secured a runner-up finish in her first NCAA Championships in the pentathlon, while the men's distance medley relay team and pole vaulter Aleksandr Solovev each placed fourth. The group also broke a pair of school records, booked four finals spots and claimed six First Team and four Second Team All-America honors.

Yakushina kickstarted the Aggies' momentum at the championships, as she became the first freshman since 2014 to rank in the top-two of the women's pentathlon following her second-place finish. She started her day on the track, running a personal-best time of 8.33 in the 60m hurdles to place second. Continuing to dominate, Yakushina blew away the field in the high jump after a staggering clearance of 1.84m/6-0.5 which marked her second career best of the day and moved her up to seventh on the A&M all-time performers list in the event. She followed that up with a pair of 13th-place results in the shot put (11.69m/38-4.25) and long jump (5.81m/19-0.75). The freshman entered the final event of the day in fifth, but thanks to a time of 2:14.87 in the 800m she shot up to second overall and concluded the event with 4,412 points garnering First Team All-America status.

The men's distance medley relay team consisting of Luca Santorum, Cutler Zamzow, Sam Whitmarsh and Cooper Cawthra closed the action on the first day, as they broke the school record in the event by over two seconds after crossing the line in 9:17.74. Santorum got the team started with an opening leg split of 2:54.24 over 1,200m, he was followed by Zamzow with the second-fastest 400m split of the event (46.23), Sam Whitmarsh with the fastest 800m split (1:45.71) and the group were anchored by Cawthra with an impressive 3:51.57 mile leg. The squad secured First Team All-America honors and five points to the team total for their fourth-place finish, while their time ranks them as the eighth-best performers in NCAA history.

Solovev made up the remaining five points of the Maroon & White men's' total, as he claimed a fourth-place result in the pole vault. He aced four bars, culminating in a clearance of 5.61m/18-4.75 which earned him First Team All-America status at his first national championship meet.

Jaiya Covington kept the impressive results rolling in, as the junior punched her ticket to the women's 60m hurdles final as the No. 1 seed. She crossed the line in 7.94, shattering her own school record, as she dipped below the eight-second mark for the first time in her career. On the men's side of the hurdles, Ja'Qualon Scott also booked his spot in the final after placing second in heat two and fifth overall in a time of 7.55.

The men also secured another pair of finals spots, as Auhmad Robinson and Antonie Nortje advanced out of the 400m prelims. Robinson ran 46.15 in heat three, while Nortje clocked a time of 46.28 in heat one, as the duo claimed the No. 4 and No. 5 slots overall to Saturday's final.

Blake Harris concluded the opening day of the men's heptathlon in 13th place with 3,096 points, as the junior recorded a second-place finish in the 60m (6.93), eighth in the long jump (7.09m/23-3.25), 11th in the shot put (12.40m/40-8.25) and 12th in the high jump (1.91m/6-3.25).

The Maroon & White added another pair of Second Team All-America honors to the team total on the track, courtesy of Camryn Dickson in the 200m and Jermaisha Arnold in the 400m. Dickson topped the opening heat of the event with a time of 22.97, placing ninth overall, while Arnold logged a 13th-place result with a time of 52.32.

Rounding out the honors for the day was the long jump duo of Khybah Dawson and Mason Mangum, as they tied for 14th with leaps of 7.32m/24-0.25 both earning Second Team All-America honors.
