BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Despite Jace LaViolette setting the program record for career home runs, the Texas A&M baseball team dropped the middle game to Kentucky, 14-11, Saturday afternoon at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Â
Offensively, the Aggies (13-13, 1-7) racked up 11 hits led by Bear Harrison, who finished the day 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and four RBI. Ben Royo followed with a 2-for-5 afternoon to go along with a homer and two RBI. Sophomore Caden Sorrell made his season debut for the Maroon & White and finished 2-for-6 at the dish with a homer and two RBI. Â
Â
After the Wildcats (16-9, 3-5) opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single, Texas A&M responded with a crooked number in the bottom half to take a 3-1 advantage. LaViolette put the Maroon & White on the board with a solo homer to Section 12 in right. The homer marked the seventh of the year for the junior and 57th of his career, breaking the program's all-time record.
Â
Following a walk by Terrence Kiel II, Sorrell launched a 52.3 degree two-run homer to the visitor bullpen in right to stretch the Texas A&M lead to 3-1.
Â
Kentucky clawed back in the third to take a 4-3 lead behind a two-run homer to right center.
Â
Wyatt Henseler answered for the Aggies in the bottom half with a 427-foot solo blast to left center. The long ball marked the 60th of the Emmaus, Pa., native's career and sixth as an Aggie. Â
Â
The two teams traded two-run homers in the fourth as the Maroon & White remained in front 6-5 heading into the fifth. Royo was responsible for the two-run blast for the Aggies as the junior went 433 feet to straightaway center.
Â
After the Wildcats posted a six-spot in the sixth to take an 11-6 advantage, Texas A&M responded with a Harrison grand slam in the seventh to pull within one, 11-10.
Â
Kentucky immediately answered with a two-run homer and a solo shot to extend its advantage to 14-10. In the bottom half, the Maroon & White loaded the bases with two outs but were unable to cut into the deficit.
Â
The Aggies once again loaded the bases in the ninth with two outs and were able to push across a run on an RBI walk from Kiel, trimming the deficit to 14-11. The next at-bat resulted in fly out, ending the Texas A&M threat and the contest. Â
