Cherono Breaks School Record on Opening Day of Florida Relays

Texas A&M Track & Field's Debora Cherono broke the 3,000m steeplechase school record on the opening day of the Florida Relays Friday at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.

GAINESVILLE – Texas A&M Track & Field's Debora Cherono broke the 3,000m steeplechase school record on the opening day of the Florida Relays Friday at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.
 
Cherono ended the opening day's action in Florida in sensational fashion, as the freshman broke the school record in the women's 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:02.32, breaking the previous record by almost four seconds. This was her first time competing in the event since joining the Maroon & White and marked Cherono's second win of the outdoor season.
 
Capturing the first title of the weekend for the Aggies was Ja'Qualon Scott in the 400m hurdles, as the junior topped the first heat in a season-best time of 49.37 which held at the top of the leaderboard throughout the event. Bryce McCray also logged a fifth-place finish in the event, crossing the line in 50.37.
 
The women's 4x100m relay team consisting of Latasha Smith, Camryn Dickson, Bria Bullard and Jasmine Montgomery set the tone for the afternoon, as they won the fifth and final heat in 43.61 which advanced them to tomorrow's final first overall.
 
Booking the second finals spot of the meet was the men's 4x400m relay quartet of Scott, DeMarco Escobar, Musa Isah and Eric Hemphill III. The group won the final heat of the prelims with an impressive time of 3:03.79 which advanced them second overall to Saturday's final.
 
Doubling down on their standout day was Dickson and Montgomery in the 200m, as the duo placed second and third, respectively. Dickson ran a personal-best time of 22.49 which jumped her a spot on the A&M all-time performers list to No. 6, while Montgomery's mark of 22.59 was a career best which debuted her at No. 8 in Aggie history.
 
Abigail Martin and Carlie Weiser recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in the discus, as Martin placed fourth with a mark of 55.51m/182-1 while Weiser was behind in ninth with a toss of 49.80m/163-5.
 
 Milena Chevallier and Mason Mangum recorded a pair of top-eight results in the high jump and long jump, respectively. Chevallier cleared 1.76m/5-9.25 to secure fourth in the women's event, while Mangum leapt 7.44m/24-5 which was good for seventh on the men's side.
