MEET PREVIEW: Penn Relays

The Texas A&M track & field team heads to one of the most decorated events on the calendar in the Penn Relays held at Franklin Field April 24-26.

PHILADELPHIA – The Texas A&M track & field team heads to one of the most decorated events on the calendar in the Penn Relays held at Franklin Field April 24-26.
 
The Aggies are well known in the history books of the Penn Relays, as they've won 33 championship wheels in program history. Head coach Pat Henry is no stranger to the meet, as he's captured a total of 66 titles, 28 of which are with the Maroon & White. A&M added to its all-time total last season, as they captured both the men's 4x400m and 4x800m titles.
 
In the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's rankings list, the Aggies hold top-three spots on both the men's and women's side. The Aggie men sit at the No. 2 slot in the nation, while the women are right behind in third. Throughout the first five weeks of the outdoor season both teams have ranked in the top-three in all the rankings checkpoints.
 
Last Time Out
A&M made a trip to Eugene to compete in a pair of meets on back-to-back days, returning 20 wins, one school record, seven all-time marks and 10 personal-best showings.
 
The Aggies dominated the Oregon Team Invitational which came on the second day of competition, as the group captured 12 of the possible 22 titles on the day. The Maroon & White swept the 100m, 400m, 100/110m hurdles, 4x400m relays and long jumps, while also claiming the women's discus and men's 1,500m crowns.
 
On the first day at the Oregon Open, A&M delivered five victories on the track and three in the field. Their wins came in the pole vault, long jump and discus on the women's side, and 400m, 400m hurdles, 800m, 4x400m and pole vault on the men's.
 
The Field
A&M will compete against a stacked field in Philadelphia, as there are 107 division I institutions competing, alongside 28 from division II, 33 from division III and another 23 from other levels of collegiate athletics.
 
Top-Ranked Aggies
The Aggie men hold six top-five marks in the country, including Auhmad Robinson in the 200m (20.21) and 400m (44.61), Ja'Qualon Scott in the 110m hurdles (13.30) and 400m hurdles (49.37), the 4x400m relay team (3:02.15) and Aleksandr Solovev in the pole vault (5.56m/18-2.75).
 
On the women's side, they claim five top-five spots nationally, with Sofia Yakushina leading the way at No. 1 in the heptathlon (6,260). Camryn Dickson makes up another two slots in the 100m (11.06) and 200m (22.48), Jaiya Covington also ranks in the 100m hurdles (12.77) and Winny Bii in the triple jump wraps up the group (13.74m/45-1).
