LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 19 Texas A&M women's golf team found themselves in a tie for seventh just two strokes outside of the projected cut line after round two of the NCAA Lubbock Regional Monday.
Â
"After our start yesterday, all you can ask for is a chance," Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "There are still things we need to clean up, but I saw a lot more good today than I did in round one. The golf course is winning, and we know it is going to be tough. If we want to advance, we need to be the toughest team. This bunch can do it. I am excited for tomorrow."
Â
Once again, Texas A&M was faced with harsh weather conditions where wind gusts were upwards of 30 MPH and temperatures reached into the 40s with wind chill. The Aggies were tied for seventh at +29 after shooting an 11-over 299 on day two. They were two strokes back of UC Davis (+27) for the final spot inside the cut. The Maroon & White will need to place inside the top 5 in order to move onto the NCAA championships in Carlsbad, California, May 16-21.
Â
Teams placed third thru seventh are separated by just three strokes. Teams in the log jam with Texas A&M are Iowa State (+26), Arizona (+26), UC Davis (+27), Purdue (+28) and Tennessee (+29).
Â
Vanessa Borovilos was in solo seventh after 36 holes and 3-over 147. The freshman shot a clean even-par 72 Monday that placed her second among golfers not on a current top five team. The top individual on a squad outside of the top five is Lousiane Gauthier of FGCU who is 1-over 145 for the tournament. The top player from a non-advancing team will move onto NCAAs to compete as an individual.
Â
Kynadie Adams had a strong back nine, nailing three birdies on the treacherous side. She was one of only three golfers Monday to nail three birds on the back. Adams finished the round 2-over 74 and tied for 19th.
Â
Cayetana Fernández GarcĂa-Poggio fired a 3-over 75 and held onto a share of 31st. Sky Sudberry rounded out the counting scores with a 6-over 78 and was knotted up in a tie for 36th. Lauren Nguyen entered the lineup for Mia Nixon and shot 9-over 81.
