BATON ROUGE – The Texas A&M women's basketball team gave the No. 5 LSU Tigers all they could handle but were unable to prevail in Sunday's 64-51 loss inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
Texas A&M (10-9, 3-4 SEC) trailed by two, 48-46, with 6:45 remaining, but managed just two buckets down the stretch. LSU benefited from five offensive rebounds during the span, outscoring the Maroon & White, 16-5.
The Aggies' efforts were undermined by a first-half injury to Aicha Coulibaly and foul trouble for Lauren Ware. The veteran duo managed just 35 minutes combined, with Coulibaly not seeing action in the second half.
Coulibaly scored 12 points in 17 minutes. Ware was whistled for two fouls in the first four minutes of the contest, eventually fouling out with four points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes.
Taliyah Parker paced Texas A&M with 13 points. The freshman chipped in defensively with four steals and two blocked shots. Solé Williams added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Aggies battled to a 13-12 lead through one quarter. Texas A&M outshot LSU 44.4-27.8% in the opening act, but six turnovers prevented the Maroon & White from opening a larger lead. Coulibaly scored seven of the Aggies' 13 points in the period.
Turnovers caught up to Texas A&M in the second quarter as three giveaways in the first 2:30 allowed the Tigers to go on an 8-0 run, grabbing a 20-13 advantage. LSU (21-1, 6-1 SEC) opened a 27-15 lead at the midway point of the second quarter. The Aggies managed to cut the deficit to five heading into halftime despite going nearly seven minutes without a field goal. Coulibaly made five free throws to cut the gap to 27-20 with 3:00 remaining in the period. Jada Malone hit a jumper at the buzzer and Texas A&M trailed 30-25 at the intermission.
LSU scored the first six points coming out of the locker room, reclaiming a double-digit margin, 36-25 at the 7:02 mark. An 11-2 run sparked by a Sahara Jones 3-pointer and back-to-back layups by Parker cut the gap to 38-36 with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter. The Tigers made three layups down the stretch, inflating their cushion to 44-38 at the last break.
The Aggies held LSU to 31.9% (23-of-72) shooting from the field, including 15.0% (3-of-20) from 3-point range. Ultimately Texas A&M was doomed by the Tigers' 52-33 rebounding advantage, including 30-15 in offensive boards.
Texas A&M returns to the court Thursday when it travels to Arkansas for a 6:30 p.m. tip in Fayetteville.
