
Lone Star Showdown Convenes Thursday at Ellis Field

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The first Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown point of the 2025-26 campaign is up for grabs as the Texas A&M soccer team hosts the Texas Longhorns for Thursday's 7 p.m. contest at Ellis Field.
The match airs nationally on SEC Network with Jonathan Yardley (play-by-play) and Marion Crowder (analyst) on the call.
Bella Yakel has played all 990 minutes to lead the Aggies. The center back entered the campaign as the most seasoned Texas A&M player, having accumulated 4,132 minutes during her three seasons at Portland. The senior defender has 68 Division I camps on her résumé, including 60 starts.
Freshman Riley Crooks is not far behind, starting all 11 matches on the A&M backline. The Huntington Beach, California, native ranks second on the squad with 960 minutes played and she has logged one assist.
Leah Diaz leads the Aggie offense with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Trinity Buchanan and Kaylee Noble have eight points with three goals and two assists apiece.
The Aggies boast a 21-7-2 edge in the all-time series since firing up the program for the 1993 campaign. In the Aggieland, the Maroon & White have a 10-1 edge in the series. The lone loss at Ellis Field came in 2007 with the Longhorns claiming an NCAA Tournament second round game, 3-2. In the last meeting at Ellis Field, the Aggies claimed a 4-1 home win in 2019, also an NCAA Tournament contest.
This marks the second bout as SEC brethren. Last season, the Longhorns prevailed 2-0 in Austin, scoring two first half goals.
Texas enters the fray with a 3-7-1 record, including a 1-3-0 mark in SEC play. The Longhorns snapped a four-match losing streak Sunday, scoring a game-winning penalty kick with 10 seconds remaining in a 2-1 victory over No. 13 Vanderbilt.
The Longhorns are led by two players with double digits in the points column. Amalia Villareal owns 14 points on six goals and two assists. Ava McDonald has logged 13 points on six goals and one assist. Olivia Ahern sports a team-high five assists. Mateya Dessieux has registered a 2.22 goals-against average in 810 minutes in goal as the Longhorns search for their first shutout of the season.
