Aggies Advance Four Entries to ITA Texas Regional Quarterfinals

FORT WORTH – Mia Kupres and Daria Smetannikov of the Texas A&M women's tennis team grabbed singles wins Saturday at the ITA Regional Championships at Friedman Tennis Center. In doubles play, Smetannikov/Kupres and Anna Perelman/Violeta Martinez triumphed to earn spots in the quarterfinals.
No. 22 Kupres outscored her two opponents by a combined 24-5 Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals. She toppled Incarnate Word's Estefania Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1 and Texas' Christasha McNeil, 6-3, 6-0.
No. 64 Smetannikov also needed just four sets to win her two matches. She bested Baylor's Wenfei Yu, 6-4, 6-4 and TCU's Victoria Gomez O'Hayon, 6-3, 6-4.
The Aggies had two players exit in the round of 32. Perelman was defeated by Texas Tech's Yekaterina Dmitrichenko 6-4, 6-3. Martinez fell to Rice's Divna Ratkovic, 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles round of 16 action, Martinez/Perelman beat Texas Tech's Ella Brownback/Elana Daskalova, 8-5, and No. 38 Kupres/Smetannikov earned a grueling 8-7(6) victory over Texas Tech's Dmitrichenko/Xenia Logvin.
Singles quarterfinal action begins Sunday. Kupres battles SMU's Sophie Llewellyn and Smetannikov faces Rice's Darya Schwartman.
The doubles quarterfinal round is slated for 8:30 a.m. Martinez/Perelman square off against Cristina Ramos Sierra/Raquel Caballero Chica of TCU. Kupres/Smetannikov battle SFA's Jemma Cave/Ksenia Mamontova.
