Cawthra’s School Record Propels Aggie Men to Arturo Barrios Invitational Title
Oct 17, 2025 | Cross Country
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M cross country's Cooper Cawthra spearheaded the men's team's first title at the Arturo Barrios Invitational since 2022 following his school-record performance Friday morning at the Dale Watts Cross Country Course.
"You always want to have positive momentum heading into the championships season and I think we set that today," distance coach Wendel McRaven said. "The SEC has become an incredibly competitive distance conference, and I'm excited to see how we compete after another set of good results today."
The Maroon & White wrapped up their regular season on a high, as Cawthra broke the school record around the Watts course which helped guide the men to their first team title at the Arturo Barrios Invitational since 2022. The women also secured a podium spot, finishing third which marks their best result in the meet in program history.
"The men's team looked great today," McRaven added. "Cooper [Cawthra] has really impressed me and specifically his maturation, he's turned into a leader that all of his teammates look up to and one they can lean on. His development on the course is evident, but his leadership off the course is great to see."
The Aggie men secured their first team win at the Arturo Barrios Invitational since 2022 behind Cawthra's school-record showing of 22:58.6 to top the Aggies and place fifth overall. He was followed by fellow top 10 finishers Jack Johnston who crossed the line seventh (23:07.3) and Youssef Asslouj in eighth (23:17.8). Victor Kibiego was the fourth Aggie to score, placing 15th (23:30.2) and Carter Gordy rounded out the group in 21st (23:42.9).
"The women finished third but we know we can race even better," McRaven added. "If we just keep getting a little bit better and get a few more people to click I think we're in a great spot."
The women's team also landed a top three team result, as the group was paced by Debora Cherono in 12th (19:56.8) and Joyce Kemboi in 13th (19:57.3) who both finished just shy of the school record around the Watts course which stands at 19:56.7. The remaining three scorers included Megan Roberts in 24th (20:21.9), Sophia Bendet in 30th (20:35.7) and San Juanita Leal in 35th (20:40.1)
