OXFORD – The No. 9 Texas A&M volleyball team swept Ole Miss for its fifth-straight win Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-14).
The Maroon & White (17-3, 9-1 SEC) extended their winning streak after sweeping the Rebels (10-11, 2-8 SEC) behind an offensive masterclass orchestrated by Maddie Waak. The setter had 45 assists in the contest which is the fourth largest total in program history in a three-set match, while directing the team to an impressive .336 hitting percentage.
Ole Miss opened the match as the aggressor with an 8-3 run, as head coach Jamie Morrison called his first timeout of the match. The Aggies responded right out of the break with an 11-4 streak of their own forcing the Rebels to huddle up (14-12). The onslaught continued, as Ole Miss had a pair of failed challenges with the gap increasing to four (18-14). The hosts worked their way back into the frame late, down one (23-22), but the Maroon & White scored the two points they needed capped off by Logan Lednicky's seventh kill to take the frame, 25-23.
The second set started with back-and-forth scoring, as the team found level at every point to 7-7. The Rebels built out a six-point advantage through the midway points of the frame (19-13), but the Aggies made their move behind an 8-1 run to lead as Ole Miss called their final break of the frame (21-20). The hosts scored three-straight out of the timeout, however Texas A&M answered again with four-consecutive points to take the set (25-23) and doubled their lead in the match, 2-0.
In similar fashion to the second, both programs traded blows before the Maroon & white forged a two-point gap as Ole Miss huddled up (11-9). The Aggies were shot out of a cannon following the break, as they ripped off an 11-3 streak, including seven straight behind Ifenna Cos-Okpalla at the service line (20-12). Texas A&M left nothing to chance, closing the set (25-14) and match, 3-0.
