SHANGHAI – Former Texas A&M men's tennis players Arthur Rinderknech and Valentin Vacherot have both advanced to the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters, which is the only ATP Masters 1000 tournament held outside North America and Europe.
Vacherot's journey started in the qualifying round, where he earned his spot in the main draw with wins over a pair of seeded opponents. Once in the main draw, he topped ATP No. 83 Laslo Djere in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4. The round of 64 featured a battle with a top-20 opponent, ATP No. 16 Alexander Bublik. Vacherot recovered after dropping the first set to clinch the victory, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The Monaco native's latest match was a hard-fought clash with ATP No. 22 Tomas Machac. With the advantage of a first set and the lead in the second, Vacherot secured the win after Machac's retirement. He is the only player left that came in through the qualifying draw. This marks the farthest run Vacherot has made in an ATP 1000 event.
Rinderknech, who is ranked No. 54 in the ATP rankings, advance through the first round when his opponent retired early in the second set. In the round of 64, Rinderknech topped ATP No. 34 Alex Michelsen in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4. In the round of 32, the Frenchman faced a familiar top-five foe in ATP No. 3 Alexander Zverev. After previously stunning the German at Wimbledon, Rinderknech struck again, fighting back after losing the first set to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Vacherot faces ATP No. 31 Tallon Griekspoor in the round of 16 while Rinderknech takes on ATP No. 19 Jiri Lehecka.
