BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M University and head football coach Mike Elko have agreed to a new six-year contract that extends through the 2031 season.
The restructured deal enhances Elko's base salary and includes escalators tied to College Football Playoff appearances. It also features an upgraded, escalating model for assistant coaches and support staff, providing increases to salary pools and incentive structures.
"I have deep respect for Coach Elko, and from the moment I first met him, it was clear he is the right leader for our football program," Texas A&M Director of Athletics Trev Alberts said. "He has not only elevated our on-field performance over the last two seasons, but he has also begun building this program for a strong and sustainable future in the modern world of college athletics. We've made a programmatic decision to enhance our program in every way possible, and Coach Elko continues to embody discipline and values at the highest standard. His vision aligns perfectly with what we believe Texas A&M should represent, and I'm thrilled to continue this journey with him as he leads Aggie Football into an incredibly bright future."
In two years at the helm, Elko has compiled an 18-5 record, including a perfect 10-0 mark in 2025. The Aggies have been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for 20 of his first 23 games, more weeks than any previous A&M head coach over the same span. Texas A&M has also excelled at home, posting an 11-2 record at Kyle Field during his tenure.
This season, Elko has Texas A&M 7-0 in SEC play for the first time and for the first time in any conference since R.C. Slocum's three straight undefeated Southwest Conference seasons from 1991-93. The Aggies' 10 wins are their most since 2012, when they posted 11 victories capped by a Cotton Bowl win over No. 12 Oklahoma. Texas A&M is ranked No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings for the second-straight week, the highest CFP ranking in program history.
"I want to extend my sincere appreciation to interim President Tommy Williams, Chancellor Glenn Hegar, the Texas A&M Board of Regents, and Director of Athletics Trev Alberts for their confidence in me and our staff for the direction we're taking this program," Elko said. "Texas A&M has the potential to be one of the nation's premier football brands and a consistent contender for championships. This commitment of resources allows us to continue elevating our program toward that goal. From day one, our mission has been to establish a standard of excellence that reflects the passion and pride of the 12th Man, and this support moves us even further along that path."
In addition to Elko's 5-2 record against ranked opponents, the Aggies have shown significant improvement across the board from year one to year two, climbing from 49th to 17th in total offense and from 63rd to 23rd in total defense. Texas A&M also posted plus-30 jumps in numerous statistical categories, including third down conversion percentage defense, fourth down conversion percentage, fourth down conversion percentage defense, passing offense, passing yards allowed, passing yards per completion, sacks allowed, scoring offense, team passing efficiency, and team sacks.
Off the field, Elko's program has excelled in the classroom and in the community. The Aggies set a program-best cumulative grade point average in his first year and have been active throughout Bryan-College Station, engaging in initiatives such as the Celebrity Softball Game with The Reach Project and local businesses, Twin City Mission's resale shops, the AlphaBEST After School Program, and NFL Flag Aggieland.
Texas A&M hosts Samford on Saturday, November 22, for its regular-season home finale at Kyle Field. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT on SEC Network+.
