BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M volleyball's Ifenna Cos-Okpalla was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, while Maddie Waak was named SEC Setter of the Week following the final action of the regular season, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Closing out the regular season in dominant fashion with a pair of sweeps, the Aggies were rewarded with a pair of weekly honors brining the programs yearly total to 13. Cos-Okpalla increased her individual honor count to eight this season, claiming her fifth defensive player nod to go with her three overall player accolades, while Waak ensured back-to-back weeks earning setter of the week and improving her yearly total to three.
Cos-Okpalla's defensive dominance continued to span to the final week of the regular season, as she recorded her 14th game this year with five or more blocks at Florida stuffing seven swings in the contest. She followed that up Sunday with an offensive masterclass, racking up 10 kills hitting at .750 percent which matched her career high and added a pair of aces and four blocks to her performance.
Waak put a final stamp on the regular season directing two impressive offensive displays, headlined by a program record hitting percentage in a three-set SEC match. The group hit .525 percent as a unit versus the Bulldogs, with five Aggies hitting at a .500 clip or higher in the game. She also guided the team to a .348 percent outing earlier in the week versus Florida for the programs second ever win in Gainesville.
The Maroon & White open their postseason campaign this week, as they head to the SEC Tournament in Savannah, Georgia, Sunday at 4 p.m. with the opponent still to be determined.
