KNOXVILLE – The No. 9 Texas A&M volleyball team secured its seventh-straight win after downing No. 16 Tennessee Sunday afternoon at the Food City Center, 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-21).
The Aggies (19-3, 11-1 SEC) added another ranked win to its resume, as they came from behind to take down the Lady Vols (16-5, 7-4 SEC) in Knoxville. Ifenna Cos-Okpalla was the standout in the contest, tying her own program record for blocks in a four-set match with 13 on the afternoon.
Nothing separated the squads early, as they were tied on seven occasions as they hit double digits (10-10). Tennessee strung together a run, leading by five at the media timeout, 15-10. The gap remained at five late, as head coach Jamie gathered his squad (20-15). The Aggies answered the call out of the break, ripping off a 3-0 streak as the Lady Vols burned a timeout of their own (20-18). The hosts regathered their rhythm and took the opener, 25-19.
Texas A&M flipped the script to start the second, pushing out to an 11-5 advantage forcing an early break from Tennessee. The halt in play didn't slow the Maroon & White down, as they piled on another four to lead by 10 (15-5). The Aggies never let the Lady Vols get close, holding the 10-point advantage (25-15) and knotting the match, 1-1.
Carrying its momentum into the third, Texas A&M started fast behind Cos-Okpalla at the service line to be up four early (6-2). The hosts battled back into the frame, as the squads found level at 11. Tennessee forged a two-point gap prompting a timeout from coach Morrison (18-16). Following the pause, the Maroon & White flipped the script with a 5-3 streak forcing the Lady Vols to burn two timeouts of their own (21-19). The onslaught continued, as the Aggies finished the frame with a 4-1 run (25-21) to lead in the match, 2-1.
Back-and-forth volleyball opened the fourth, as nothing separated the teams through the opening 20 points (10-10). The deadlock ensued to 17-17, but it was the Maroon & White who struck back-to-back forcing a timeout from the Lady Vols (19-17). Tennessee responded with two straight, as Texas A&M did the same. Needing another late push, the Aggies picked up the tempo thanks to Cos-Okpalla's defense at the net recording three blocks in the final five points to seal the set (25-21) and match, 3-1.
