Patton Shines in Debut, No. 1 Aggies Complete Sweep of Elon
Feb 16, 2025 | Baseball
With the win, the Aggies (3-0) secured their fourth straight Opening Weekend sweep and their 15th in the last 17 seasons. The series sweep featured 20,606 rowdy fans at Blue Bell Park, marking the largest Opening Weekend crowd in program history.
Patton earned the win after tossing five innings of one-run baseball in his Maroon & White debut to go along with eight strikeouts. The left-hander retired the first seven batters he faced and struck out the side in the second.
Catcher Jacob Galloway powered the offensive attack for Ol' Sarge's charges as the newcomer went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI. Freshman Terrence Kiel II reached on all three plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. In addition to Galloway, Kaeden Kent and Jace LaViolette also left the yard in Sunday's finale.
After Patton retired the Phoenix (0-3) in order in the first, LaViolette put the Aggies on the board with a two-run homer to right that left the bat at 108 mph. The long ball marked the third of the series for the junior, matching his total from Opening Weekend a season ago.
The Maroon & White extended the lead in the fourth behind a two-run single from Galloway and an RBI single from Gavin Grahovac.
Elon got on the board in the fifth courtesy of an RBI groundout before the Aggies exploded for six in the bottom half to push their lead to 11-1. Following back-to-back-to-back walks from Hayden Schott, Gavin Kash and Blake Binderup, Kent ripped a grand slam down the right field line that traveled 345 feet. The junior's grand slam marked the third of his career and second of the season for Texas A&M.
Two batters later, Galloway tallied the third homer of the afternoon for Texas A&M with a two-run shot to right. The junior's first homer in the Maroon & White traveled 352 feet and left the bat at 103 mph.
The Phoenix answered with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to trim the lead to 11-5. Wyatt Henseler got a run back for the Aggies in the seventh with a sacrifice fly that scored Jamal George, who reached on an infield hit.
Elon went on to push one more run across in the eighth to make the final tally 12-6, in favor of Texas A&M.
