MEET PREVIEW: Charlie Thomas Invitational

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Aggies return home to host the Charlie Thomas Invitational Feb. 7-8 at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track and Field facility. Events begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The Maroon & White prepare for their fifth meet of the season, as both sides of the program stand in the top-10 nationally in the USTFCCCA rankings. The men hold the No. 2 spot and have 11 top-10 individual marks in the country, while the women rank eighth with three top-10 results.
Last Time Out
The team had an impressive showing, as it split travel between the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque and the John Thomas Terrier Classic in Boston. The group in New Mexico captured eight event titles to go along with a pair of school records, while the team in Boston broke nine personal bests and tacked on another two A&M records.
Setting the tone in last weekend's meets was the group in Boston, as Debora Cherono and Cooper Cawthra downed their own school records in the mile for the second-straight week. Cherono crossed the line in 4:38.08, while Cawthra dropped over three second on his previous best with a time of 3:54.38.
In New Mexico, Jaiya Covington continued her impressive run in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best mark of 8.00 which adjusts to 8.02 due to altitude. Capping off the standout performances, Aleksandr Solovev cleared 5.80m/19-0.25 to become to the first Aggie ever to soar over 19 feet.
The Field
The Maroon & White welcome a stacked field of 14 teams to the Brazos Valley this weekend for its final regular-season indoor home meet. The group includes Baylor, East Texas A&M, Houston, Mississippi State, North Texas, Oklahoma Baptist, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, UT-Arlington, UTSA and West Texas College.
Top-Ranked Aggies
Spearheading A&M men's No. 2 ranking is Solovev, as he leads the nation in the pole vault with a mark of 5.80m/19-0.25. The men have another eight top-10 ranked individuals and relays on the track, with Auhmad Robinson in the 200m and 400m, Hossam Hatib, Kimar Farquharson and Antonie Nortje in the 400m, Ja'Qualon Scott in the 60m hurdles and two 4x400m relays. The team also adds another two in the field with Mason Mangum in the long jump and Gavin Champ in the triple jump.
On the women's side, Covington tops the NCAA in the 60m hurdles with a mark of 8.01. Winny Bii holds the No. 2 spot in the triple jump and Jasmine Montgomery holds seventh in the 200m.
