No. 2 Aggies Sweep Illinois to Advance to ITA Indoors Quarterfinals

URBANA – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team toppled the host Illinois Fighting Illini in Friday's opening round of the ITA National Indoor Team Championships, 4-0, at Atkins Tennis Center.
Texas A&M (6-0) started the match earning the pivotal doubles point. Mia Kupres/Daria Smetannikov needed just 27 minutes to toppled McKenna Schaefbauer/Kasia Treiber on court 2, 6-2. Mary Stoiana/Lucciana Perez secured the lead with a ranked win over No. 61 Megan Heuser/Kida Ferrari on court 1, 6-3.
The Aggies' singles points were all straight set triumphs. Lexington Reed nailed down the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Treiber on court 6. It marked the freshman's 11th straight victory and 14th of the season.
No. 2 Stoiana bested Schaefbauer, 6-3, 6-3 on court 1. The senior is now Texas A&M's career leader in singles victories with 120.
No. 12 Nicole Khirin completed the victory with a 6-3, 7-5 victory on court 2 to improve to 17-4 on the season with her eight consecutive win.
All the unfinished matches were destined for three sets. No. 101 Kupres split her sets against the Illini's Violeta Martinez, 4-6, 6-3 on court 3. No. 41 Perez and Ferrari were into the third set 1-6, 6-2, 1-1 on court 4. No. 125 Smetannikov and Ariel Madatali also divided their sets, 6-1, 3-6 on court 5.
Texas A&M battles the No. 11 Texas Longhorns in Saturday's quarterfinal action. Match time from Atkins Tennis Center is 3:30 p.m.
