Aggies Finish Second at Louisiana Classics
Mar 11, 2025 | Men's Golf
LAFAYETTE – A late charge by the No. 24 Texas A&M men's golf team came up shy as the Aggies finished second at the 40th Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
Starting the day three strokes behind No. 7 LSU, the Aggies swapped the lead with Tigers multiple times during Tuesday's final round. With the last group teeing it up on the last whole, the two teams were tied atop the leaderboard at 18-under. The Tigers' Alfons Bondesson secured the victory with a birdie putt moments after a putt from 15-feet further by A&M's Phichaksn Maichon was inches off target.
The Aggies finished the tournament at 17-under 847 after Tuesday's final round 5-under 283. LSU closed out the tournament at 19-under 845, posting a 4-under 284 in the third round. The top five was rounded out by host Louisiana (-7), No. 38 Little Rock (+1) and Sam Houston (+7).
Playing as the tournament's defending champion, Maichon finished two strokes behind tournament individual co-champions Bondesson and Louisiana's Malan Potgieter who finished 9-under 207. Maichon sandwiched tallies of 2-under 70 around his second-round 3-under 69 to finish 7-under 209 to claim All-Tournament recognition in third place.
Wheaton Ennis also made the All-Tournament squad, tied for fourth at 5-under 211. He fired a 2-under 70 Tuesday to move up five shots on the leaderboard.
Aaron Pounds registered a t-10th finish, closing out with an even 72 in his last loop. He shot 3-under 213 for the tournament.
Michael Heidelbaugh recorded his second consecutive top-15 result. His even 72 in Tuesday's action completed a 1-under 215 tournament, finishing t-14th.
Jacob Sosa rounded out the Texas A&M fivesome. His final round 1-under 71 moved him 17 spots up the leaderboard to finish t-40th.
Vishnu Sadagopan (t-28th - +4), Alex Long (t-35th - +5) and Jaime Montojo (39th - +6) recorded top 40 finishes playing as individuals.
Texas A&M returns to action March 24-25 when they head to Palm City, Florida, for the Valspar Intercollegiate Invitational.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach Brian Kortan
On the tough battle in the final round...
"Going head-to-head against a really good LSU squad and a tough Louisiana team on a golf course that presented a lot of challenges with the wind and green speeds. It was a good test for sure. You hope to get in those situations because it makes your team better and mentally stronger. This one leaves a pretty sour taste in everybody's mouth though, because we didn't finish it off. We were right there to earn a victory and we just didn't execute down the stretch. The last two holes we didn't play the way we needed to play them."
On working the small details down the stretch...
"I think we're doing a lot of things really well, but we have to be better doing them well when the lights are brightest. That's what separates good teams from championship-caliber teams. Championship teams don't take a step back when the lights get bright. They jump to the front because they want to be in the light. We need to do a better job of taking advantage of opportunities and embracing the fact that the ball is in our court. So we'll talk about it when we get home. This should galvanize us because it stings. These guys are really resilient, and they are really good at what they do."
