BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – A pair of late inning home runs doomed the No. 19 Texas A&M baseball team in its SEC Opener Friday night as they fell to No. 17 Alabama 6-4 at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
After the Crimson Tide (18-1, 1-0) opened the scoring with a two-run homer to right center in the second, the Aggies (10-7, 0-1) cut the deficit in half with a run in the third. Jamal George led off the frame with a single through the left side and later came around to score on a Jace LaViolette RBI double.
In the fourth, the Maroon & White evened the score with an RBI groundout from Hayden Schott that plated Terrence Kiel II, who reached on a leadoff double and advanced to third on a throwing error.
Alabama regained the advantage, 4-2, in the fifth with a two-run homer to the right field bullpen. Texas A&M fired back with a run of its own in the sixth courtesy of an RBI single from Sawyer Farr. The RBI marked the first of the rookie's career.
After threatening in the seventh with runners on the corners, the Aggies eventually tied the game in the eighth behind an opposite field solo home run from Schott that just stayed inside the foul pole in left. The designated hitter's third homer of the season left the bat at 104 mph and traveled 385 feet.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, the Crimson Tide regained the lead, 6-4, for good with back-to-back solo homers. Texas A&M looked to respond in the bottom half as the first two batters reached base safely but a double play and a groundout ended the contest.
Starter Ryan Prager received a no-decision after battling through seven innings, allowing four runs on five hits. In relief, Brad Rudis was handed the loss after allowing two runs in a third of an inning.
