NAOTB: Erica Defferding
Each week, 12thMan.com checks in with a newcomer on the Texas A&M soccer team.
This week, we chatted with Erica Defferding. The 2024 Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Year joins a talented netminding corps.
At what point during the recruiting process did you decide this was the place to be?
It all happened pretty fast. Coach G reached out to me, and as soon as I saw his name popped up on my phone, I immediately called my mom and I was so excited. Growing up in Texas, you know about Texas A&M soccer, so I knew I wanted to visit right away. After talking to Coach G, I could see myself here, and I was just waiting for the opportunity.
What was the deciding factor?
For me, it was the overall environment. The coaches, the soccer program, the competitiveness in athletics, and everything the school has to offer academically. I felt like Texas A&M would prepare me best for my future..
What was your visit like?
As soon as I stepped on campus, I knew this was the right spot for me. The coaches were super welcoming. I was looking for an all-around school, and Texas A&M is exactly that a perfect mix of competitive soccer and strong academics. It checked all of my boxes.

As a goalkeeper, you have the best view of the entire field. Are you the vocal type, always communicating with your backline?
I try to be intentional with my communication. I want it to be productive and not come across the wrong way. But in the middle of a heated game, my competitive side definitely does come out, but I try to keep everything I say intentional.
If you were scouting yourself, how would you describe your style of play as a goalkeeper?
I'd say I'm calm and collected. As a goalkeeper, you have to be calm because you're constantly dealing with shots and pressure. I think I bring a presence of confidence without being overly aggressive.
What would you say is your strength as a player?
I think my biggest strength is staying calm. No matter where the ball is – whether it's someone dribbling at me, the ball in my hands, or the ball at my feet – I stay composed. That's an important trait for a goalkeeper, as the position can be very nerve-racking.

What is it like having a head coach who was a former goalkeeper?
Honestly, it's pretty cool. I've never had that before. Coach G has so much experience and knowledge. It's great to be coached by him every day.
How much have you learned from Coach G so far?
I've learned a lot, especially little things that I didn't even realize were bad habits. Recently we've been focusing on crosses, working on going backward instead of just forward, and giving myself more time to judge the ball properly.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?
My parents have always been great role models for me. My mom, in particular, is a really hard worker and that's something I look up to. I hope to be as hardworking as she is one day.
What is your major and what do you plan on doing with your major?
Right now I'm a biomedical sciences major. After college I plan to go to dental school.
How helpful has it been having six other transfers go through this transition with you?
It's been super helpful and honestly really cool. Coming from a small school to a big one was a huge adjustment, but having others going through the same thing made it easier and made me feel less alone in the process.

What has been the highlight of your collegiate career so far?
This past season has been my highlight. It was a big turning point for me as a player, where I really stepped into the type of goalkeeper I wanted to be. I also took on more of a leadership role and played with more confidence in my own style.
What is your goal this year?
My goal is to contribute to the team in whatever way I can. I hope to get time on the field and showcase my abilities, but ultimately I just want to be there for my team and enjoy the game. After two seasons, I've realized that it's all about having fun with the people around you.
How excited are you to play in front of the 12th Man?
I'm so excited. I've heard so much about it and I can't wait to experience the energy. I can only imagine how great it will be.
