TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: Louisiana Classics
Mar 08, 2025 | Men's Golf
LAFAYETTE – The No. 24 Texas A&M men's golf team looks to claim the trophy at the Louisiana Classics for the fourth consecutive season as the Aggies battle a 12-team field Monday and Tuesday at Oakbourne Country Club.
In its 40th year, the Louisiana Classics is among the top 10 longest continuously running tournaments in the nation. The teams will once again be tested by the par-72, 7,141-yard Oakbourne loop.
Last season, the Aggies dominated the course and the field, finishing off a 17-stroke victory. Phichaksn Maichon left the field in his wake in a tournament-record eight-stroke victory. He logged two bogeyless rounds, including a 7-under 65 for the last round. The excellence resulted in a tournament record matching 18-under 198
In 2023, Texas A&M won the tournament by 11 strokes over second-place Little Rock. Jaime Montojo and Vishnu Sadagopan earned All-Tournament recognition with fourth-place efforts.
The Maroon & White torched Oakbourne Country Club in 2022, posting a school-record 47-under for the tournament, clearing second-place LSU by 12 strokes. Sam Bennett won the individual title at 18-under, clearing the previous tournament record by five strokes.
Maichon looks to repeat as tournament champion as he heads the Aggies' lineup. The Bangkok, Thailand, product is joined by Michael Heidelbaugh, Aaron Pounds, Wheaton Ennis and Jacob Sosa. Montojo, Sadagopan and Alex Long are entered in the tournament as individuals.
The 12-team field features a strong regional flavor with seven schools from Louisiana and Texas. Texas A&M is joined by No. 7 LSU as the two SEC teams headlining the tournament. Other top 100 teams in the field include No. 38 Little Rock, No. 65 Sam Houston, No. 75 Rice and No. 81 Louisiana.
Ol' Sarge's charges are slotted No. 24 in the Clippd Rankings and No. 28 in the Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll.
The teams play 36 holes Monday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The final round starts with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. from holes No. 1 and 10.

COURSE
Established in 1955, Oakbourne Country Club is renowned for its mature oak trees and beautiful water hazards. A claim to fame of the club is being the home of two former winners of the PGA Championship – Lionel and Jay Hebert – the only brother duo to claim the title. Formerly swampland, architect Dick Wilson laid out the course with future tweaks by Ken Dye and Joe Finger. The course is well-maintained by superintendent Jason Barra. The course served as host of the PGA Tour's Lafayette Open Invitational (1958-59) and Cajun Classic Open Invitational (1960-68).
