Kent's Walk-Off Grand Slam Completes Historic Comeback
Apr 12, 2025 | Baseball
The win secured the Aggies (20-15, 6-9) first SEC sweep of the season and extended their winning streak to a season-high six games.
Facing a 12-7 deficit heading into the ninth, the Maroon & White loaded the bases with no outs and called upon Hayden Schott in a pinch-hit situation. The graduate student turned on a 2-1 pitch and deposited into the left center bleachers for a grand slam, pulling the Aggies within one. Schott's grand slam was his first of the season and traveled 418 feet.
After Jace LaViolette worked a single in between a pair of outs, back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Kent, who led off the frame with a single. The junior delivered with his fourth career grand slam, sending the 2-1 pitch 377 feet to right to walk it off.
The Maroon & White opened the scoring in the first for the third straight game as Caden Sorrell plated Terrence Kiel II, who reached on a hit-by-pitch, with a sacrifice fly. In the second, Kent came around to score on a wild pitch as Texas A&M extended its lead to 2-0.
The Gamecocks (20-17, 2-13) cut the Maroon & White advantage in half in the third with a solo homer to left. In the fifth, South Carolina batted around and plated seven runs to jump in front, 8-2.
After the Gamecocks stretched their lead to 12-2 in the sixth, Texas A&M got a run back in the bottom half on an RBI groundout from LaViolette.
Blake Binderup trimmed the deficit to 12-5 in the seventh with a two-run homer to left. The redshirt sophomore's fourth homer of the season traveled 410 feet and left the bat at 105 mph.
The Aggies continued to cut into the deficit in the eighth as two more runs came around to score on a Sorrell double.
Caden McCoy (2-1) earned the win in relief after striking out one over 2/3 inning of work. With the Maroon & White facing a 12-2 deficit, Brad Rudis entered the game and quieted the South Carolina bats over three scoreless frames. The senior matched his career-high with five strikeouts in the scoreless outing.
